I'd be skeptical. The fat later gaskets don't fit the early covers at all, and the thin ones would be way too thin on later valve covers. My guess is aftermarket parts sellers are being lazy, don't know or care that the early version is substantially different, and the early gasket is actually NLA. Pretty sure that the thin gasket was 85 only, and only for Turbos, the only 16v engines that year - not much of a market for that part now. Even if it was used on some 86s,thats still not a lot of cars. Plus the fatter ones fit a whole ton of engine variants. I would call around to a couple remaining indys. Alternatively, get a later valve cover, but not too much later if you want cosmetically identical - you want one with two Phillips screws on the plug cover, not four torx.
All said, if you find the early gasket, please let us know, as I have a car with one.
