Our starters have a plastic forked arm called a "shift lever" inside that pushes the pinion into the flywheel ring gear when the solenoid is actuated. When mine got stuck as you describe, yes hitting it freed it up, but it just got stuck again and again. This was because the plastic forked shift lever had broken on one side. It would sorta work, but not well and not all the time. You can rebuild the starter easily enough, and they aren't super hard to change compared to those on other cars. The shift lever is SAAB part number 7527765, but that won't get you super far. It's equivalent to Bosch 1001933106, 1001933108, 1001933111, 1001933112, 1001933115, and 1007010141. You can probably find it online if yours is broken.
