Hi folks,

My 86 900S 16V is new to me, I've had it for about a month and a half.

220k or so miles. Extremely extensive records. Transmission has been well serviced, but no records of a rebuild.

5 spd shifts fine, does not pop out of any gears.

I do notice a slight whine in 5th between 55 and 65. Goes away if I let off the gas.

My only prior experience with classic 900s is with my brother's 900 SPG 20 years ago.

The classic 900 is obviously louder and has more noises/whines/vibrations than a modern car.

Can you guys describe pinion bearing whine to me? This sound I have is subtle. If you're not listening for it, it could be easily missed. It won't be heard if windows are down or the radio is on. How would I differentiate a bad pinion bearing sound from normal 900 engine and gear whine/noise? It could just be the resonance of the engine/transmission at certain speeds. If I had the car longer, I would have something to compare to....but I have no baseline. I knew to listen for pinion bearing whine in test drive, but I thought it would be more loud/obvious. Now that I have more intimate time with the car, I've noticed.

I guess I'd need to find and take a ride with a SAAB specialist. I did have a SAAB shop look at it and take it for a ride and they did not mention it.

Also, worst case - if this is indeed the very beginning of a pinion bearing issue ... If this is a car I'm keeping as a collectible, to be driven maybe 1000 miles a year, is it even something I'd really need to worry about?

Thanks so much!!

Alex
