Alex, I have very close to same issue you describe - '86 900S with 210k. It has a barely perceptable whine. The NA cars are well known to go 200-250K without issues.
My long term, 30+ years, experience with these cars and the 5 spd transmissions.
I do trans fluid changes at a max of 12k miles. I very carefully inspect the material caught in the magnet on the drain plug. If chunks of metal or a 'very fine sparkly' show up on the magnet I plan for trans replacement or rebuild. I believe that the deterioration of the pinion bearings begins with the hardened bearing race beginning to fail resulting in the hard polished surface material beginning to fail, resulting in the sparkly appearance in the magnetic 'mud' on the drain plug.
The very slight 'whine' when on power, that stops when off power is the pinion bearings. If it's barely noticeable without very careful listening I wouldn't worry, especially if a few thousand miles is all you are looking for.
Do change your trans oil, and use high quality oil. I use Redline MTL.
