The most likely thing is that the clamp bolt of the coupling is loose and the coupling has slipped around. I'd suggest going through the shift linkage adjustment procedure before you dig much deeper. For a 1989 car you just put the transmission in third gear, loosen the clamp bolt, install a pin through the shift rod and hole in the shift lever housing and then tighten the clamp bolt. The procedure is detailed with pictures in the factory service manual posted on this site, section 4.1 "Manual Transmission". Other possible causes exist but I think that's the first step to take.
