Finally got around to working on this. With the steering rack in the way, I can barely get to the clamp bolt. Tried every way possible to loosen it but it won't budge. Is removing the steering rack really the only option here?

But - a few other puzzling things:
1. With it in 3rd gear, and an allen in the shift rod alignment hole next to the gearbox, the holes inside on the gear selector rod and housing actually line up fine, without stress or binding. Not sure what loosening and tightening the clamp bolt would do to change or improve that alignment.

2. There's a ton of oil and/or ps residue underneath (it's my first time really working on the car since obtaining it last year), and it seems to have made its way along the shift rod so that there's a good bit of oil under the gear shift lever assembly. I doubt this is normal or good for anything, yes?

3. All of the shift linkage posts I've read talk about problems with 1st/3rd/5th vs 2nd/4th. My issue is 1st/2nd - when the gear shifter is moved to the left as far as it will go, 1st/2nd are just not there. The shifter will center fine and find 3rd/4th/5th/R fine. I don't know enough to even speculate what that means.

Thanks for any help you can give!
