The motor ran fine had 180,000 miles on it we just wanted to do a rebuild. What would cause the thrust bearing to spit itself out. The motor was running just fine there was no noise after the rebuild and the whole entire time that it was in the possession of the owner. We didn't have any running issues until it showed up at my shop from Ohio to Missouri. Wouldn't you think a thrust bearing not being in there should have been noisy? So the situation is that the transmission was making a funny noise we did not rebuild the tranny,so we were shipping the car back to my shop. The gentleman that drove it up on the ramp apparently drove it up very aggressively up and over a second set of ramps. So we had the long ramps that he was driving on and he didn't put the flip down ramps down he just drove over them which was about a 2 in square tubing that he had to end up driving over, and the car sits really low it bottomed out on the frame of the trailer and cracked the transmission case and I mean it shoved the shift rod out of the back of the transmission towards the rear of the car about two inches. I don't know if that impact would cause a thrust bearing to come out or not. He tried to start the car I guess a couple of different times on the trip back from Ohio to Missouri and then by the time it got here the motor was not sounding right and something was definitely wrong. It didn't look like enough wear on the crank or the engine block or the number 3 cap to look like that had been running without one thrust bearing in there for the last 300 miles. Which is about how many miles it had on it you would have definitely heard the thrust bearing I would think. And the other thing that we noticed after he drove it up that we know he did it was because it's spilled all of the transmission fluid all over the exhaust and it started smoking before he turned it off so we know the transmission fluid was leaking out after he pulled it up on the trailer, it was all over the spare tires that they had under the trailer and I showed the guy exactly what he had done but he was from Europe somewhere and spoke zero English I couldn't make him understand that he had broken it. I talked to the dispatcher with the company and he was trying to explain to me that the guy was telling me that it was like this when he put it up on the trailer. First of all there's no way because the car wouldn't even have driven with the way that the case was and he hit so hard that he pulled the shifter out of the transmission so when I got it here to my shop I had to pull out my Jack get the car up in the air hook the linkage back up so I could even back it out and even then all I could really do is get it in reverse enough to get it rolling and then it basically locked up. All this is to say that I'm trying to figure out if this impact would cause a thrust bearing to come out. The owner said the car had no problems with the engine but it had lots of problems by the time it made it here. And I would think 300 miles of driving with no thrust bearing there should have been a ton of metal in the rod bearings and the main bearings and there should have been a lot more wear on the number three cap and a lot more wear on the block and the crank but it's very minimal so it's basically like it just happened while he was pulling it up onto the trailer. any thoughts?
