I did a conversion once, from non-vented to vented. The hub spacing was different on my car. I know some people who say the hub spacing was not different for them, but this was my experience. I think there may have been a running change somewhere along the line.

Anyway, the only difference in the caliper is the sliding yoke. The rest (piston + cylinder) is the same between vented and non-vented. It is nice to have a tight yoke-caliper slide. If there is wear, you can build up the yoke with weld and file it down to make the right sort of shape and tighten things up. It is easy welding. Anyone could do it, the metal is so thick.

I would not change to non-vented. They warped easily in my experience. Get your old brake discs turned. There are still shops out there that will do it. Also, there must be a similar-enough disc from some car out there that will fit, possibly with modification. Someone will come along with that information in due time I reckon.

My experience with spinning the wheel by hand mirrors yours. It was fairly easy to spin them by hand but they'd come to a stop fairly quickly. Seemed the rears were easier and could go around a few times before stopping. Remember the fronts are also turning the inside of the transmission and CV joints and things, so there is drag from that as well.

I think I remember about the same temps coming from the wheel, although IR thermometers were not so cheap back then.

I have rebuilt these calipers myself several times and I know all about how they go together, if you have other questions. They are not a horrible design, just a little strange compared to what we are used to. I wrote a post about it on saabworld, which I think is also mirrored here someplace.
