Datsun used technology similar to what you are talking about in the old Z-Cars (240/260/280z) They didn't use a float, but instead had 4 sensors in the bottom of the tank that monitored the level of fuel through resistance with accuracy to 1/64 of a gallon. The fuel guage in these cars offered the standard guage and when the guage went into the reserve/empty area a second guage would take over in 1/32nds. Datsun only used this technology for 4 years and then went back to standard units/technology.
????Who knows?????
