When in Arizona, I ran 10w-40 summers and 5w-30 winters; since moving to Minnesota (don't ask!), I've run 5w-30 year-round the last 4 years. Always RedLine synthetic. I've had no problems.
Admittedly, there are many on this board with far more knowledge than I have... but I challenge any of them to defend the thesis that you are better off with a very thick oil that will greatly retard initial lubrication in colder weather.
PS: If this is a turbo application, I strongly recommend that you consider synthetic rather than petro oils. I unabashedly endorse RedLine's oil and MTL, without kickbacks, discounts or even nice letters from them... it's great stuff and they are very willing to talk your ear off about why. Check out their website: http://www.redlineoil.com. Anyway, it's worked for me, >200k on orig motor, turbo and tranny. Good luck.
