Do you have the original transmission in the car? '85s (and all 900s through '89 or '90) have an all-metal tranny dipstick which is *much* longer than the dipsticks on the later cars. If yours is gone, it's reasonably likely that the screw which secures it to the exhaust manifold is gone... there should be a little "loop" on the exhaust manifold for it. If that bolt gets lost, the dipstick will quickly follow since that's the only way it's secured.
Can't help on the driving problems, but it sounds vacuum related. It is possible that you cooked something internally (piston, valve, etc.) if the vacuum advance was not properly installed... you'd have no retard under acceleration or boost, and a lot of pinging would surely result.
Regardless, there's some quality diagnostic time in your future... :)
Good luck,
-Justin
