900 AT shifts strange- normal?

Hi,
I purchased a '89 Saab 900 a few months back. It looks in great shape and drives excellent, since the previous owner works at a SAAB dealership. well taken care of with around 115K.
I've always noticed that it shifts very stange. It an automatic. In first gear, it starts out pretty fast and shifts to 2nd very good and fast. However, when going from second to third gear, the rpm goes up to over 3k before it actually shifts. It also makes a slight "thump" noise- and the car almost jerks a little bit when it finally shifts to third.
Also, sometimes when I accelarate slowly, it will take a while to shift to third gear, but will shift right away when I let go of the accelarator.
I've taken the saab to the local independent Saab mechanic here in Portland, OR for oil/fluid changes often. When this is done, they say they inspect the car but have never said anything was wrong.
Is this just how the 900 shifts with auto. trans? or do you guys think I need the trans serviced or repaired? I asked the shop to change the AT fluid before when I got the oil changed but they said the fluid was still new. Or is the trans. going broke? I'm a student who needs transportation every day but would hate to sell this car. Any input would be greatly appreciated by anyone. thanks-have a great weekend.
