The shifting problems related to synthetic happens if you put synthetic MOTOR OIL in there (as opposed to synthetic gear lube). MTL is synthetic gear lube, which apparently has worked well for many people. The thing that is really important for you to remember is this:
if you have gear lube in the transmission - only replace with gear lube
if you have motor oil - replace with motor oil or redline MTL.
If you currently have gear lube in there and change to motor oil or MTL, you could cause transmission failure within 5-10,ooo miles, so don't do it. Townsend Imports suggests using Mobile 1 synthetic 75w-90 gear oil. You could also use the Saab recommended straight 75w gl4, but you will never find it. I looked high and low, and it just isn't available on the market.
Information on the proper lubricant to use in your gearbox can be found at http://www.townsendimports.com, the mechanics who host the chat on Saturday nights.
Lastly, if your transmission has a lot of miles on it, contains gearlube but shifts fine, just leave it alone.
