No your not goimg crazy, the interval is not a set milage. The automatic tensioner will extend outward app.-11mm to take up the slack as timing chain set wears.By the 11mm extension of the tensioner the cam timing inrelation to the crankshaft is retarded and your engine preformance has dropped noticeablely. The change is gradually and most owners do not detect it.The whole timing chain(the chain, crankshaft gear, cam gears, guides, and the tensioner) set has to be examined for wear in the evaluation process.A new chain on old worn gears and other worn parts is not a wise procedure.I like to run my crankcase oil level 1/2 quart higher than normal to help in the splash lubrication of the timing set.If your looking for good preformance from your engine, change your timing set before you can hear it making noise.I like to change before 9mm extension on the tensioner piston.
