I put this question to the Saab master tech who is one of the sponsors of this page (Ywan Mason at Townsend Imports). Anyway, he said in 25 years of working on Saabs, he has only seen a handful of Saab motors with broken timing chains. Most of those were older (pre1985) motors which apparently have a different tensioner set up. There are WAY more than a handful of Saabs out there with hundreds of thousands of miles with the original timing chain. Consequently, he said not to worry about it. On the other hand, if you are really concerned, and you have the money to spare, change it, but I think you are wasting your money before 150,000 miles.

P.S. I did meet a guy once who wrecked his motor at 110k because the timing chain broke. But I think that was a rare occurrance at such an early milage.
