This is commonplace. I've worked in a half dozen shops and all of them have had mechanics that have taken customers' cars home at night. This is the easiest way to insure that there is nothing mechanically wrong with the car. A mechanic knows what to listen for in a car more so than the average driver, problems tend to surface more often when a car is cold and hasn't been driven. I would be happy that my mechanic went the extra mile and took my car for an extended test drive. I'm sure he is broadly insured on the vehicles that he drives and reputable mechanics don't tend to abuse their customers' cars. This is so common that when I just asked the shop manager about it he said "in my 50 years working on cars I've never heard of a shop that doesn't do it" I just wouldn't worry about it so much....and greasy rags around a shop signify to me that the mechanic is actually doing some work...I would be more worried if the shop were completely clean.
