Your post put a grin on my face, too, Bill.
Back in 1989 I was moving from Pax River Maryland to Monterrey California. I had a U-Haul trailer behind the Beastie, towing it from coast to coast. As I was going up the mountains on the highway into Salt Lake City, there was a steep grade at somewhere over 8,000 feet, and traffic was crawling. It was summer, and the outside temperature that afternoon was 105 degrees. Big engined American cars were belching gas-rich smoke as they labored up the hillside at 30 mph.
I flew by them doing 70 or so, slightly in the yellow most of the time. The Air Mass Meter system for regulating air/fuel to our Saab engines has to be the greatest high-altitude and high-temperature solution ever made for internal combustion engines! There's just no way a sea-level tuned car with a carb or standard fuel injection system can lean itself properly up there in that thin air, and then adjust for load demands. As your Mustang acquaintance found out, Turbo Saabs Rule at Altitude!
Glad everything's working well for you!
