I was in the same position as you, and in fact, I think I might have bought discs that aren't really that great. I wanted more bite than the Saab pads I had, so fitted EBC GreenStuff all round. You could try them just on the front, but their other benefit is that they produce next to no brake dust. Then again, it is the front brakes that produce most of the dust anyway.
GreenStuff is EBC's Kevlar compound for daily driving, so they don't need warming up. The bite is much improved, except if you use them just after first moving off on quite a cold day, when the bite is about what you'd get from normal pads. I've never had to test this, but they are claimed to be very resistant to fade. I have had Saab pads fade, and I really didn't think I'd been pushing them that hard.
I'm still waiting for ATE PowerDiscs to be available for my '96 9000. I'll bet they and the GreenStuff pads would be a great combination.
