I learned about differences in disc materials many years ago when I had an Italian motorbike with Brembo brakes. The front disc was grey cast iron - wouldn't look too bad in an Italian summer, but British weather made it turn orange overnight. Anyway, all my friends had powerful Japanese bikes (my Benelli could outhandle the best of them, but 125cc was no match for a state-of-the-art 250cc Jap bike on the straight).
Anyway, these bikes were all very pretty with their lacquered aluminium engine casings and stainless steel brake discs that would never rust. However, the brakes on my Benelli with its little caliper and little grey disc were incredible. The Jap bikes, with bigger discs and calipers, needed a lot more pull on the brakes to give the same stopping power.
Eventually someone explained to me that grey cast iron is one of the best materials for a disc in terms of coefficient of friction, and I've been aware of it on cars since then too. The original Saab discs on my Aero (made by Zimmerman, I believe) stopped a lot better with Saab pads than the discs I have now (of unknown origin) with Saab pads.
I note that Trent Saab's brake upgrades include grey iron discs. The downside, I believe, is more (or at least, darker) brake dust.
