I know I have some vacuum leaks aznd intend to fix them, but what are the symptoms of a failing fuel pump? Is the 900mL in 30 seconds test prescribed in the Haynes Manual the definitive way to go?

One other question about starters. When positive battery voltage is applied to the signal tab on the side of the starter, a solenoid connects the positive terminal to the starter motor and it runs. During this rotation the gear which spins the flywheel is also pushed out. When (+) battery supply voltage is removed (you stop cranking the starter) should this gear pop back in (and thereby disengage from the flywheel) or does this function not matter for a long lived starter.

At the auto parts store this weekend the cleak tested the 4 rebuilt (AutoLite) starters they had in the shop, all of which did not have gears that immediately popped back when signal voltage was removed.
