It sounds like what happened was that your first one-way clutch went out and that the thrust washers (cylindrical bears are a dead giveaway) near the planet gear were taken out as well. This clutch is a "freewheel" of sorts since it engages when the engine rpm drops to near idle and is responsible for the automatic upshift from 1 to 2. You have already found out that a second method of accomplishing the same shift is through manually shifting through the gears.

I've had automatics go on 900T's as well as go partially (same one-way clutch failure as yours, but much less severe) on my '90 9K. I've rebuilt both, and I personally prefer the 9K's design, but admittedly, some of the internal parts seem a bit lightweight for a 200+ HP and a car the size of a 9K. The fact that the 225 HP AERO engine was only made available with a manual is circumstantial evidence that SAAB knew that they were near the margin of reliable operation at 200 HP with the 4HP-18.

I suspect that when the first failure occurred and you found that you could not go forward you reved the engine and that's when the extensive damage occurred. The D clutch next to the planet gears will slip, burn and eventually disintegrate throwing pieces of it around in the tranny internals if this happens. You can potential drive in the manual upshift mode for a long time with no additional problems (personal experience).

I found Erikkson before I found this BB. They were referred to me by another ZF "expert" shop. I have communicated with them extensively during the course of my current rebuild project, and I can't think of anyone else (other than myself - since I have a vested interest, not because I claim to be as knowledgable) that I would have work on my SAAB transmissions.
