When I got into the internals of the 4hP-18, I talked with Erikkson's and others about resources. There is a ZF workshop manual for this transmission that cost about $150. I have never seen it, but apparently it has far more information than is needed for rebuilding and is confusing because of its detail and organization. The SAAB automatic manual has been essential in my education and except for giving information on the individual valve and governor spring lengths, tensions, and interchangibilty between turbo and non-turbo units, very thorough, complete, and informative. It is specifically designed for a rebuild, not for detailed theory or specialized modifications, although the theory of operations section is also very informative for troubleshooting.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the inner workings of his/her SAAB 9K transmission, and certainly for a rebuild job. About $30 - $35 from any SAAB dealer.
I am not familiar with the Mitchell manuals.
