A broken timing chain would not prevent the engine from cranking. The starter engages the flywheel, which turns the crank directly. There wouldn't be compression because some of the the valves are stuck open. I've never heard of a head gasket catastopically failing in normal driving to the extent that all four cylinders are showing severe pressure loss. If the dealer did do a compression test then my money is still on the chain. If the compression test wasn't done then anything is game.
