It seems like there are a lot of things in the engine compartment that make funny smells at various times. Before doing anything drastic (or expensive) you should go to another mechanic and NOT MENTION thatyou think the turbo is bad. His diagnosis might be completely different, accurate, and cheaper. It may be (and this is really hoping) that you have something dripping onto or stuck to your exhaust manifold. On my '87 the valve cover seal was old and oil slowly leaked out onto the hot manifold and turbo - where it burned and made a funny smell. Don't count on it being the turbo so soon.
