Hi,
I want to thank everyone for all of your very helpful input today. It is really great to have so many ideas and I've learned a lot.
What about this: what if I buy the car, own it for a year, do what has to be done to it, etc. and then if I am fed up with it, just sell it after my internship is over and I move away from Hartford. Best case scenario, I put no money into it, sell it for not too much less than I paid, and drove a great car. Worst case scenario, a couple of major things break, I put a couple of thousand bucks into it, and I sell it for not too much less than I paid. If I buy a newish Japanese car, I won't likely have a problem with it, but if I sell it a year later, I'm going to lose one or two thousand bucks on it anyway just because a 95 Corolla is worth that much less than a 96 or whatever.
Or maybe I'll decide I love the car and want to hang onto it despite the hassle and the cost.
What's the difference?
