I've never used either Saab or Mercedes coolant in any of my five Saabs, except the first two years in each with the stock mix, and never had a head gasket failure. What can a coolant do to contribute to the life of the head gasket anyway?

Until the extended-life coolant became available, I always used Prestone and, with my past two cars, Bars Leaks. The '91 began using Texaco's orange coolant about half-way through its life, and I had no cooling- system problems of any kind, and the present owner reports no problems at 177k miles.

My present Aero is relatively low-mileage at 67k and has had no cooling-system problems. It has been running Prestone extended-life coolant for two years and Bar's Leaks for the three I've owned it.

Saab and Mercedes coolant are both ethylene glycol, just like most modern coolants, with the Mercedes variant having the distinction of not having the green dye most prefer to have for identification purposes. Although identifiable by odor, it is nice to be able to look at a puddle in your driveway and know whether it is AC condensation, drippings from that afternoon's rain, or a coolant leak.
