odometer ticking off mileage in idle

HELP!
We have a 89' 9000 hatchback. It has been a wonderful car until recently.
It has 220,000 miles on it. Last year a year old battery died on us. We
replaced it and had only one incident with a dead battery which we were able to
jump start it.

Well this summer we had 2 separate incidents that confuse us. The first
situation the battery died, we jumped started it / it ran one day/ next day
tried to start the car. The battery was dead - we jumped started it , AS WE HAD IT SIT IN
IDLE TO RECHARGE THE BATTERY, THE SPEEDOMETER WOULD REV UP TO 65 MPH AND THE
ODOMETER TICKED OFF 8 MILES (we were standing still). The next day, the car was
fine. 2 months later, coming off the highway, the car AGAIN started to rev in idle
and tick off mileage and making an odd ticking noise. Got home, turned off the car,
then tried to turn it back on - THE BATTERY WAS DEAD!! When both of these incidents
had occurred, the temperature was above 90 degrees F.

Our mechanic said that it is an electrical problem. Could the problem
possibly be an incorrect battery. The initial battery in the car was a
vented battery. We replaced it (according to the store display signs)
with a nonvented battery.

HELP!!!!!!!
