I've been having some rough shifting even with a new rebuilt auto transmission with only several thousand miles on it. I've been suspecting the motor mounts, because the engine moves pretty good in the compartment, but I now just finally had the time to investigate.
The two motor mounts that I've located (the easily visible top right-hand mount, and the mount on the left side of the transmission) are clearly shot (rubber torn, cracked, etc.). I haven't been able to see the other two mounts. (Is that right, four mounts total?) Do I need to remove the right wheel lining to see them? I've crawled around from every possible angle and can't seem to spot them. I seriously suspect that all mounts are going to need to be replaced. The car has 145k on it, and as far as I know have never been replaced.
Haynes describes replacing some of the mounts by lifting the engine from the top with an engine lift, is it possible to jack up the engine instead? How long might it take a hack like myself to replace all the mounts? Anyone have any links to extra instructions on the process?
Thanks.
