And this is a good way to shift in normal driving - relax gas while slightly preloading the stick toward next gear and let it release of its own accord, then stroke the clutch as you engage the next gear. If you stay on the gas ever so slightly and add gas just as the clutch engages, it makes for very smooth, positive shifts. My older brother taught me this technique many years ago (after I marveled out loud about his ultrasmooth, positive shifts). He was taught the technique by his Catholic priest brother-in-law; go figure.
I can see where people would say it sounds like it would be stressful on the transmission and/or clutch, but it actually is less stressful on them if done properly (can't prove that, I just feel it). And I now see what Andrew was saying. But again, I disagree. It's all in the timing.
