I know that I'm opening myself up for a whole bunch of comments by this title.
Anyway, I got the job of teaching her to shift a manual tranny, and she always would force it into first while still rolling. As Julia will tell us, it's not good to force anything. Sorry. Anyway, I finally realized I would never stop her from that habit, so we agreed on a compromise that she could put it into first when the car was going as slow as a baby crawls. That worked.
I frequently do the shift into neutral without the clutch thing and agree that, done properly, there is abolutely no resistance. You almost find yourself in neutral without even trying. However, I never try to enter a gear without the clutch.
