My recent findings are that the Genuine Saab BLUE antifreeze that came in the later "1999 & up" model Saabs is equivlent to the Mercedes antifreeze after doing services on many 9-3 & 9-5 models. The proof is the lack of corossion and pitting at the thermostat housing and the color of the metal on the thermostat.
Recently I have also noticed a ORANGE tinted antifreeze coming out of the local Saab dealership. I dont know anything about it YET.
I also hear Saab installs Mobil1 10/30 in the 03 models. Its about time. The way I feel about it is ... Super metals ....why not use super fluids. Its pretty incredible when you do a service on a 90's classic 900 5 speed and go to replace the filter and after 37,000 miles of use of Amsoil 20/50 series 2000 synthetic engine oil that has been in there and the filter AND magnet that lives behind the filter is perfectly clean, requiring NO replacement ... It sure tells me something.
The super fluids have allowed me to safely say we can extend the Major service interval to 40.000 miles and possibly beyond. If you live in the city. Mountain driving, dirt roads, and unusual heavy loads like trailer pulling or heavy sales items in trunk or extra fat people or full car commute will need to stay with the 30K schedule.
ON the DI ignition cars ,,,,will need to have the spark plugs replaced at 30K as the high voltage takes a toll on thr plugs. I suspect that excessive plug gaps caause the DI to work harder and leads to early failure. However notice that the 2000 up 9-3T has NGK platinum plugs tthat will extend their replacement interval. I dont have enough experience with these plugs in DI to say when they will start failing. I know on the NON platinum plugs in the DI ...failure is common around 30K as I have had to interrupt my scedule many times to do a quick check on a drop ins weird run condition on acceleration.
