Why does everyone pick on the automatics

There are plenty of manual transmissions failures reported here. And all everyone talks about is how lousy the automatic is...
Anyway, I got my 93CS (5spd NA) about 5 years ago with 77K on the clock. The second day we had it, I noticed a whine that seemed to be transmission related at highway speed. Having had 2 c900's (read: more than 2 transmissions), I was a little freaked out and immediately replaced the fluid with Mobil One. Since then, the noise has not changed. Shifting is the same. Car has not been babied or abused. Seems fine. Fluid still smells fine and has good feeling. I no longer feel the noise indicates a problem that requires attention.
There has been a lot of talk here about using only regular motor oil in the manual transmission. People have written of total failure shortly after a switch to synthetic. Others have multi-changed when switching to make sure that every last drop of the original oil is out and only synthetic remains. I did not do any of this. In fact, I don't even remember what weight Mobil One is in there.
If I make it through tomorrow, I will know the evil Saab gods were not listening. I will really be kicking myself for writing this if I ride home in a tow truck.
