Auto-transmission, tightening the "single band."

Got problems with my '93 9k CD with auto-transmission. Everything seems to be OK, apart from the fact that it's like having a badly-slipping clutch when I try to move off in first gear. Revs rise, car creeps. 2nd gear and up are all fine, the car pulls well.
Will tightening this mysterious "single band" in the auto transmission, in the manner as recommended by Mr. Townsend's site, have any beneficial effect on my problem?
The problem appeared yesterday without any warning symptoms at all.
Help!!
Please!!
