I've been there, and they are more knowledgeable about the problems and causes and solutions to uneven tire wear and/or out-of-specs front-end alignments (which, BTW, is all that can be done on the 9K). If you go to a dealer, and you do have a problem, they will automatically recommend replacing front-end parts which can get pricey, wheareas sometimes you can get away with some minor fixes or aftermarket solutions.
For me, my '98 is out of spec for front right camber (due to a curb-kiss earlier this year), and because of it, the car will not drive straight. Going to a dealer would result in having to replace the whole strut assembly. Going to the tire shop resulted in being told of camber-fix kits that allow the front camber to be adjustable. The strut is fine, rebounds perfectly, and appears to be straight, so I'd rather pay $17 for a camber kit.
One thing the tire shop did tell me was that my rear toe is out, and that can only be resolved by the use of shims being installed by a Saab dealer. So, some things you can't escape from the dealer with.
Good luck!
Joe
