Hi Jack,
Had a similar problem not too long ago on the first cold, damp day of winter here in Hong Kong. The car chugged, almost stalled a few times, even when running. It was very worrying with all sorts of expensive thoughts coming to mind!
I solved the problem by spraying contact cleaner through the airflow meter (it lives just after the engine-side outlet of the air-cleaner, mine has Bosche written on it)after removing it, which is easy. Don't try to touch anything inside the meter, just spray everything inside clean. Let all traces of condensation evaporate before re-fitting. The contact-cleaner I use is made by CRC, it leaves no residue, it evaporates away rapidly (hence the condensation) and it works a treat. I also use it to clean the insides of computers, so it's safe. Throttle-body cleaners work the same way and can also be used. Try it, it's cheap and easy, and it just MIGHT solve your problems.
