According to the 1990 handbook I have here, the plug gap recommended by Saab for DI equipped cars is 1.0mm +0.1/-0.2 assuming NGK BDPR6ES plugs in a non-turbo 2.3. Your .031 is a little under .8mm which sounds a bit skinny.
If you are going to try testing the splark plugs by installing them in the DI as Rick suggests, you could check out the following link to the Townsend Imports article on trouble-shooting starting problems with what I think is your ignition system. Getting this wrong might be expensive!
