(long and no apologies)(typos par for the course)
At 125k... my own sense would be... look at the pulleys. If the PO has done frequent belt changes, the pulleys are apt to be in good shape. My Aero had its' pulleys changed out at around 65k, for a 5 yr old car, this done by the dealer prior to my ownership. Belts and idlers and pulleys are PM items (p reventative m aintenance). The serpentine swap out os fairly routine once you know how its done.
other things? motor mounts? tranny mount?
I'm now at 88k on my Aero. One year into it for me. I replaced the all motor mounts and the tranny mount last summer as a PM item. Also swapped out the tranny and bakre fluids..
I too like to look for waht to replace and do it before it becomes an issue. I know Saab has a great database of what got repaired at what mileage on all there cars. I wish they would publish a set of avg data for parts replaced at mileage/age points. It would be a great assist in anyones ownership of a car. *I* know stuf is gunna break... I expect it, I'm a big boy.. show me what the data says so I can be proactive... If I see that 90% of all alternators are replaced at or by "x" mileage, and I am damn close to "x", I want to replace it. Period.
Without the data, I anticipate the following in the next year. DI Cassette, possible front end nigglies.. bushings... any other rotational accessary like the alt, comprsr. I've put over 20k on the car so I will be replacing the serpentine this summer hell or high water. It's too cheap not to, considering the result of loosing the belt.
Theory. ( anyone? ) A slightly worn belt will result in a snowball of downhill wear. as a slighty worn belt rotates, the variences in the belt will wear "bad" marks in the pulleys, as well as create uneven pressure on the pulley, in turn causing extra wear on the pulley bearings, which when it is all added up results in a chain reaction of bad wear. One on serpentine I replaced on another 2.3l, there were tons of tiny missing bits of the belt. I would think these imperfections created by wear would also set up vibrations that woudln't normally be present. The viibrations get added to the equation...
Sooooo, my theory is that by replacing the belt early, before the slight imperfections arise to the point where the snowball gets big, the cost saving will be in not replacing the pulleys as frequently. Pulleys seem to be a 60-90k item. If the belts are replaced at 20-25k instead of the 40k(?) reccomended, will it result in a long term cost savings?
( let me be the first take a few pot shots at my own theory? )
Siezure of any pulley/device in the loop will result in catstophic failure of belt and potentially would cause all kinds of other problems. :^) negating the whole she bang.. how often does this happen in a 9000? Dunno...
I replaced all my motor mounts. truns out the tranny mount was fine, but it didn't hurt to replace it and by rejuvinating all the rubber supporting the engine, I am hoping I am preventing many problems, from over flexing the exhaust system to maintaining proper alignment of the drivetrain, not to mention the effect of long term vibration... so to those that say, don;t worry, sometimes a touch of worry and some effort can save tons of bullsh*t down the road.. :)
cheers
