I am looking at rebuilding my '87 9000 Turbo engine and wanted to get some input into the subject here. I know I can get a much lower mileage engine for about $550, but I can also do the work required to rebuild. I am looking at rebuilding for the following reasons:
1) I have low compression on cylinder one that I now believe is caused by both intake valve(s) not sealing and rings that are failing.
2) I am getting blue smoke on occasion when launching from a stop.
3) 292,000+ miles on this engine
4) I'd kinda prefer knowing that everything is fresh and the engine is basically at 0 miles.
5) I already have a 2.3L head that I'm using and would rather not spend more than I have to.
6) Parts for rebuild are less than a used engine.
7) Extra money "saved" could be used for inner drivers and some new engine mounts.
That said has anyone done a rebuild and if so what has been the experience with rebuilding the 2.0 engines? I have access to a cherry picker and engine stand and of course I won't be paying a shop's labor rate.
