on my '91 with the factory Aero's over this last winter. I didn't touch the center paint since it was in good shape, but I did manage to polish the lip on each rim.
I used "Aircraft remover" on the clear coat and within 30 seconds or about as fast as you can brush it on, the clear turns to a bubbled/rippled slime. Once you get all the clear off, you'll have to sand all the corroded parts with a fine sandpaper to get to the bare aluminum. I started with about 150-180 on the bad parts since I didn't want to gouge the wheels at all. I then used some the black emery compound on a polishing wheel attached to my 1/2" drill, working my way around the rim. I then used tripoli using the same method on a separate wheel, then some white "rouge" stuff on a buffing wheel. After washing the rims between each step and being careful not to hit the paint-overall being cautious, I think they came out pretty decent. I hand polished the wheel lips with Mothers Mag and Aluminum and they have a high polished/near chrome finish.
It's worth the time and effort since it makes a huge visual impact.
