a hand-held (one-sided) razor-blade worked great for me. I felt that hand holding the razor-blade was safe because I couldn't put enough force on it to gouge the surface of the block. The edge of an old credit card (or something similar) also works well initially for more of a "brute force" approach.
Focus particularly on the area directly surrounding the cylinders. This area should be as close as possible to perfectly clean and smooth.
Good luck!
