Hey I did mine a couple of weeks ago. I am pretty sure you could do it with a big long breaker bar and a friend holding it from above. I tried this method but it is tricky because the long handle is in the way of putting the new belt on, and also, we had a hard time getting the socket to firmly grip the bolt and it is not desirable for it to slip when you've got the tensioner compressed. If you are adventerous then try it, but you risk exploding your tensioner and that is a big headache. The tool makes it much simpler, and then you've already got it for next time. I second Patrick's suggestion to not skimp on the steel you use for the tool... I made the first one as described in the Haynes manual, and it bent... do anything you can to make the metal stronger than you think it needs to be.
Oh yeah, and get a diagram of the belt routing before you start.. if you don't find one, try your owner's manual... I think I might have seen it in there.
