I don't know what year your car is, but if it's not a '91 or '92 which are known for soft balance chain gears, you may want to eliminate the easy source of chain noise before starting your big project. There is a plastic pad, called the timing chain guide, which sits in the valve cover. The part is less than $10 from site sponsors and takes a minute to change once the valve cover is off (get a new gasket while you are at it). See the link to a chain about it from last week, includes a schematic in one of my posts.
