Well the amount of wire you need depends on where you place the amp. If you put it under the passanger seat I think you will need less then if you put it on the back of the back seats. A decent quality 18 guage speaker wire is not that expensive and works well for your application so it won't cost a lot if you buy too much. If you place the amp in the back you need 3 - 4 feet for each 6x9 and you will need to measure how far to to go to the front right and then how far to the front left. I generally add about an extra foot on to the measurement to allow for routing difficulty. I don't think I measure that carfully though.
If you have you new amp wired correctly and the volume turn up to an audible level then the new amp might also be bad. What kind of amp is it by the way (Company and model)? I can get an idea of what could be wrong with it if I can look at the manual online. Also is your headunit good? Did you ever check to see if that plays? Try and play the left front speaker off the headunit to make sure that it is good, this will take the amp out of the equation. If that works next try to hook up the amp and see if that works. It is always good to rule out what is not broken first.
