Hi, if your car drives then I think you should get a second opinion at another shop.
I live in Boston and whenever possible I get my car fixed in northern Vermont. I pay low parts prices and half the labor rate of local shops and deal with nice honest people.
It has made owning a Saab possible for me and my family. The value of a safe car shouldn't be underestimated.
I don't know why they wouldn't do a chain on such a low mileage car. My understanding is that the 2.0 liter very rarely needs a chain done, maybe they're afraid the engine has been oil starved. Did you ask them why they wouldn't do it?
At any rate, I doubt $1000 would do the job unless they can roll the new chain in. With the labor rates in MA you'll be closer to $2000 probably.
