I would recommend finding a '94 or newer 2.3 motor for your '96 9000, as it will be the same. One difference that comes to mind right away...the crankshaft position sensor on your '96 is mounted IN the engine block, sensing a wheel on your crankshaft inside the crankcase, while the '92 engine has its crank sensor mounted externally behind the crank pulley. This started in '94. The timing cover/cylinder head are also different, but that would only matter if you are only replacing the block. This also changed in '94. A '94-'98 2.3 would definitely be the easiest bolt-in.
