The early 2.3 engines had soft balance shaft gears. It's very common for the older ones to have the gears worn to nubs. If the balance chain comes off, it may or may not screw up the timing chain. If it does, it's very expensive.
I would stick with a newer ('94 or so) 2.3 engine. If I had an earlier (like your '92), I would consider doing the chains while the engine was out.
