Take a 9-3 Viggen for a ride. 250HP in that same jittery chassis.
9000S aren't 'true Saabs' either. The 9000 chassis was bought from the Italians, Lancia I think. Given the current trends towards globalization, none of that matters anyway. You have to judge each car on their strengths and weaknesses.
The 9000, even to this day, has a lot going for it. Fairly light chassis with great space utilization. As much room inside as 5 series but with the size and weight comparable to 3 series. No cars really split that seam as well as a 9000.
Reliability wise, the 96,97 and 98s are the best. They're pretty much free from major problems. The key to getting a good used 9000 is not so much mileage as it is maintenance history.
Aeros, properly maintained, require no more maintenance than other models.
Key items;
Motor Mounts
CV Boots
Water Pump
Belt Tensioner & wheels
Brakes
Clutch (Hydraulic)
A used 9000 will be one one side or the other of these components.
Good Luck
