Our care-giver came in the door yesterday morning and asked me why her car was running rough. She inherited my wife's 1992 9000S to tote our kids for various things.
My first suspicion was the DI as she mentioned smoke and gas smell coming out of the exhaust. Anyway, I went out and drove the car, the car was actually fine when warm so I left for work. When I came back, I drove the car again, this time, cold. The engine was rough but not overly so, so I pulled the plugs, the plugs were a wee bit oily but not foul at the electrodes. There was no strange smell at the DI coils. So I regapped the plugs but that didn't do anything. This car already had the newer style DI so I switched the DI from my '95 Aero in. Bingo! No rough idle, the engine purred like a well fed kitten.
So I sent her on her merry way home with the DI from my Aero.
I took my wife's 9-5 Aero and picked up a new DI at dealer cost this morning, OUCH OUCH OUCH. I know, it always happens that a snow storm is going to hit. The exact same thing happened 4 years and 80K miles ago.
So, if you have sources of inexpensive DIs, get a spare or two ! I can start hanging those non-functioning DIs on my garage wall or paint little DI icons on the side of our Saab :-).
Bracing for another winter storm .....
