turning the key: fact or fiction...

Please help settle a spousal dispute :) When I bought the 9K Aero last summer, the previous owner instructed me thus: "When you start it up, turn the key halfway, wait for the dash lights to come on, then turn it the rest of the way." Because I'm gullible, I do this faithfully. My husband thinks that this is unnecessary, since the ignition switch was dying at the time and we had it replaced within a few weeks of buying the car. So every time he starts my car, he just turns the key all the way, which makes me cringe. (Disclaimer: neither of us has more than a very rudimentary knowledge of automotive technology.) It works either way. I'm just wondering if there is any truth behind the reasoning of waiting for the dash lights to come up before cranking it all the way. Thanks!
1995 9000 Aero, yummmm
