The Haynes manual recommends putting a block of wood up into the caliper if you're forcing it out with air. I once had a badly stuck caliper, so I took it to the gas station and used compressed air. When the piston hit the block of wood, everyone heard it. However, no damage to the piston. More likely in your case, however, that rust is preventing the piston from being pushed back into its bore, so it should come out easily. I like Suo Timo's idea of using the brake pedal to push the piston out. Sounds easy.
